Efficient power: MAN commercial vehicle engines
MAN commercial vehicle engines are extremely efficient and environmentally friendly thanks to consistent application of state-of-the-art technology. Their output ranges between 150 and 680 HP. The Common-Rail high-pressure injection system, turbocharging, exhaust gas aftertreatment tailored to individual requirements and high-strength lightweight materials used in all MAN diesel engines makes them extremely efficient. Reliable and future-proof power units through more than 100 years of diesel competence.
Common-Rail injection system
All MAN Truck & Bus diesel engines are equipped with state-of-the-art Common-Rail injection systems that finely atomise fuel at pressures of up to 1800 bar and inject this into the individual cylinders at precisely defined intervals. All relevant data such as engine speed, engine load and engine temperature is continuously forwarded to the engine electronics which calculates the optimum injection timing and quantity of fuel injected into each cylinder for every driving situation in a fraction of a second. This makes the engines extremely fuel-efficient. High-pressure injectors atomise the fuel particularly finely when injecting it into the combustion chambers which means the diesel-air mixture burns extremely cleanly and efficiently. The optimised combustion process also means that Common Rail engines are much quieter.
Turbocharging
To obtain the best possible power output, as much air (and therefore also oxygen) as possible must be pressed into the cylinder. MAN is the first ever commercial-vehicle manufacturer to use exhaust-gas turbocharging in conjunction with charge-air cooling which produces a significantly higher quantity of oxygen in the cylinder. This means that more fuel is completely burnt with the oxygen during every ignition cycle which results in a higher output.
The power density delivered by MAN diesel engines nowadays would not be possible without turbocharging. This means that MAN trucks and buses can deliver the same performance with smaller engines. This makes them lighter and more fuel-efficient.
The turbocharging operation ensures a high torque and therefore acceleration with powerful traction, even at low speeds. Less fuel is used, vehicles are quieter and the driving experience is more relaxed at low engine speeds. The 2-stage turbocharging operation ensures a particularly agile and confident acceleration performance. The necessary charge pressure is delivered by a series-connected small high-pressure charger and large low-pressure charger. The small high-pressure charger is used when accelerating out of the low engine speed range and is responsible for the extremely good response characteristics of MAN engines. The shift strategy of MAN TipMatic® gearboxes is perfectly tailored to the dynamic performance characteristics of the engines.
Euro 5 and EEV
All trucks of the Trucknology® generation satisfy the optional EEV (Enhanced Environmentally Friendly Vehicle) environmental standard. The EEV requirements are once again more stringent than the Euro 5 exhaust-gas standard that applies from October 2009. All MAN and Neoplan city buses and coaches satisfy the EEV requirements as standard. Customers whose vehicles operate in environmentally-sensitive zones in particular can demonstrate a high degree of environmental responsibility through the deployment of EEV-certified commercial vehicles. Modern trucks equipped with Euro 5 or EEV reduce operating costs due to the lower toll rates.
MAN AdBlue® technology
MAN trucks in the heavy TGS and TGX range with MAN AdBlue® technology satisfy the Euro 5 exhaust-gas standard as well as the more stringent, optional EEV exhaust emissions standard. MAN uses an SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) catalytic converter to do this. MAN AdBlue® technology has a proven track record due to its high reliability, low fuel consumption and low consumption of Adblue® additive. MAN AdBlue® is used for truck engines in the D20, D26, D28 series with outputs of between 320 and 680 HP.
MAN PURE DIESEL® technology
MAN PURE DIESEL® technology ensures low emissions in the light and medium TGL and TGM truck series and also city buses and coaches. This technology is based on steplessly controlled exhaust-gas recirculation (EGR) with low-temperature charge air cooling. This saves weight and installation space and convinces due to its low fuel consumption. Commercial vehicles equipped with MAN PURE DIESEL® technology satisfy the Euro 5 exhaust-gas standard and the optional EEV emissions standard. MAN PURE DIESEL® is used for
- Truck engines of the D08 series with outputs of between 150 and 340 HP
- City bus and coach engines in the D08, D20 and D26 series with 250 to 505 HP
MAN natural gas engines
Natural gas engines are an environmentally-friendly, economic and future-proof alternative, particularly for city buses operating in a public transportation network that has an existing natural gas supply infrastructure to fall back on. Consistent downsizing: the high power density of the new E08 natural-gas engine with outputs of 220 to 280 hp enables the use of a smaller, lighter and more economical engine in the same vehicle. It achieves EEV exhaust values by means of a three-way catalytic converter without additives or particle filters. Like all natural-gas engines from MAN, this is a future-oriented solution to enable operation in inner-city environmental zones.
